Secondary ELA Adoption Process 2024 Board Presentaion (1).pdf
Summary: The Middle School and High School English Language Arts Adoption Committees began meeting in Fall 2023 and included teacher representatives from across the District. Teachers worked in teams as they went through the review process. Materials were available for review by the community in September and February, at the Willow Creek Center, and feedback surveys were collected. After reviewing materials and presentations from a variety of vendors, using California Department of Education and Contra Costa County Office of Education evaluation tools, the Middle School and High School Adoption Committees each decided to pilot materials from McGraw-Hill and Savvas. Each pilot lasted four weeks with training provided by the publishers prior to each pilot. At the end of the pilots, the teachers met in person to review the data collected, community, and student survey results, and compared materials to District and State criteria with consideration to our diverse district needs and to make a recommendation. The Middle School and High School English Language Arts Adoption Committees are recommending an 8-year contract with Savvas for the Middle School and High School English Language Arts courses: English 6, 7, 8, and English I, II, III, IV. This contract would include online and printed materials, teacher professional development, and the materials are available in Spanish in support of emerging bilingual students.
Funding: Learning Recovery Block Grant, Program Code 3435
Fiscal Impact Not to exceed $5,276,000
Recommendation: Move to approve the standards-aligned English Language Arts materials for Middle School and High School English Language Arts instruction.
