Summary:
|
The California Department of Education and the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) provided a California Teleconnect Fund to support districts in meeting the needs of students during the COVID-19 crisis. Their provision of hotspots ensures a 50 percent discount on the monthly recurring services charges for mobile data services that allow districts to meet the needs of student that do not have internet access at home. At the June 8, 2020 Board meeting, the Board approved a purchase of 600 hotspots. The Chief Business Officer was able to secure the purchase of 1000 more hotspots under the same parameters as the June 8, 2020 purchase, noted in the quote attached. The devices will be prioritized for those students identified by school staff and the Student Services Department, especially our homeless and foster youth students. If there is a need in the school year for more devices and a funding source is identified, we will be able to purchase more through TMobile or other service providers. The cost of the 1000 hotspots is $180,000 and CARES Act funding will be utilized for the expense.
