Summary:

Review and Potential Ratification of the Bristol Meyer grant for Bancroft Elementary School to support their STEM Education Project. Bancroft launched their FIRST Inspires STEM Education Project this year which is a hands-on, STEM Learning Programs through a progression of team-based robotics challenges and backed by a global network of mentors, coaches, and volunteers, to help young people discover a passion for STEM and develop the skills they'll need to succeed in today's competitive workforce. Bancroft’s goal is to have students learn not only about the Mission and Challenge, but how to value each other's ideas, rewards of teamwork, and the use of technology while having fun. Bancroft plans to train as many Robotic Leaders as possible to build capacity and grow the program in the future.
The Bristol Meyer grant will provide funds to purchase additional LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 Core Sets which are hands-on STEM solutions that introduce computational thinking and engineering principles. The funds will also be spent on purchasing materials for completing the challenge. This year’s challenge is to create new ways to help people to be able to play and move. The First Lego League challenge also focuses on key social emotional skills important for students to have practice in developing such as Discovery, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun.
This year’s challenge is to create new ways to help people to be able to play and move. This includes designing activities that are accessible to individuals with disabilities. Bancroft will host a Virtual Festival where the different teams will share what they have created. Bancroft's teacher, Meleah Hall, applied and was awarded the $10,000 grant from Bristol Meyers to purchase additional WeDo 2.0 Core Sets for the school. Ms. Hall previously raised $2000 on Donors Choose in August to purchase eight sets for the students to share, but due to Distance Learning and students safety the kits needs to be rotated. Now thanks to the Bristol Meyer grant each student will be able to check a kit out for the year. |
